Fly Screen Doors in a New Zealand Home

New Zealand houses are built around indoor outdoor flow, which is a polite way of saying the door to the deck stands open from late afternoon until bed all summer. That is the opening that matters, and there are really only three of them.

The ranchslider

The wide aluminium slider onto the deck, which most New Zealanders call a ranchslider, has been the standard way of opening a house since the 1950s. Many were supplied with an insect screen running in an outer track, and when people give up on that screen it is almost never the mesh that failed: it is worn rollers, a bottom track full of grit, or a panel that has been forced off line. Rescreening a panel that will not slide fixes nothing. A screen fixed to the architrave covers the opening whatever the old track is doing, and it does not depend on the rollers at all.

French doors and the back door

On French doors the second leaf is usually bolted shut and only one side gets walked through, so a single panel across the whole opening closes the side you never use as well. On a single hinged back door the panel goes on the architrave and the door keeps swinging normally behind it, which matters if it is the door you carry washing through.

When the door is also the room's ventilation

Under the healthy homes ventilation standard, an external door counts towards the openable area a habitable room has to have, and it has to be able to be fixed in the open position. In an open plan living area the ranchslider is often the opening doing that job. A fly screen is not part of that standard and does not make a property compliant, and Tenancy Services is the reference on that. What it does is make an opening that has to stand open something you can actually leave open in the evening.

A note on sandflies

If you are on the West Coast, in Fiordland or anywhere sandflies are the local problem rather than mosquitoes, a standard insect mesh will not stop them. They are small enough to pass through it. That is a case for a dedicated fine midge mesh, which we do not make, and we would rather say so.

Fitting before the season

The New Zealand season runs from December through February, with the humid north, Northland and Auckland, starting earlier and staying warm longer than the South Island. October and November are the sensible months to have it up, because a made to measure panel is produced after the order rather than picked off a shelf.
