Custom window screens

This is the most common request, and the one where the gap between standard and custom shows up fastest. Window frames are rarely true, especially in older housing: a few millimetres of difference between top and bottom is enough to leave a way in. Made to measure for British homes

British joinery is rarely a standard rectangle, and a lot of it you are not allowed to drill into. Here is what that means for the opening you are measuring.

Sash, casement and bay windows

Three shapes that off-the-shelf screens almost never fit:

Sash windows: the screen goes on the outer frame so the sash still slides behind it. Nothing is fixed to the moving part.
Casement windows: measured on the outer frame, which lets the window open outwards with the screen staying put.
Bay windows: each pane measured separately, or the whole bay covered in one piece with magnetic splits where you need to reach the handles.

The same applies to French doors, patio and bifold doors, and to Velux and other roof windows in a loft conversion.

Renting, or living in a listed building

Two very British reasons you cannot put screws in a window frame. Most tenancy agreements forbid drilling, and in a listed building or a conservation area you may not alter the joinery at all. A magnetic screen fixes to an adhesive strip on the frame: no screws, no holes, nothing to make good, and it lifts off cleanly when you move or when the inspection comes round.

uPVC, timber and painted frames

The strip holds on uPVC, painted timber, aluminium and render: the four you will meet in almost every British house. Wipe the frame down and let it dry before fitting; on a cold or damp day, warm the frame gently with a cloth first, as adhesive grips far better above about 10 °C than it does on a damp winter morning.

Midges, mosquitoes and the rest

The weave is tight enough for mosquitoes and houseflies, and fine enough to stop midges, which matters far more in the Highlands and the west of Scotland than most catalogue screens admit. It still lets the light and the air through, so it can stay up all summer without darkening the room.
