Renting and fly screens, answered
Do I need the landlord's permission?
For a screen that is not drilled or screwed, generally no, because nothing is altered. Agreements differ, so if yours is strict about anything attached to the property, a short message explaining that it is adhesive and fully removable usually settles it. Keep the reply.
Will the adhesive strip damage the paint?
On cured paint and on aluminium or uPVC profiles it lifts cleanly with a little heat from a hairdryer. The one case to avoid is freshly painted timber, where the paint itself has not hardened. If in doubt, test a short length in a corner and lift it after a week.
What does the agent see at inspection?
A fitted screen reads as a soft furnishing, like a blind. It sits flat against the frame and lifts off in a couple of minutes if anyone asks. The strip is applied to a painted or powder-coated profile, not to plasterboard.
Can I take it with me when I move?
Yes, and that is the point. The screen is a panel cut to your opening, so it moves with you. Only the strip stays behind, and it comes off with gentle heat and a wipe of isopropyl alcohol.
My opening is not a standard size. Does that matter?
No. Every screen is cut to the measurements you give us, so an old sash window, a narrow galley door or an oversized stacker are all handled the same way. Rentals are exactly where non-standard openings turn up most.
Does it hold through summer?
The adhesive is rated well above the temperatures a shaded frame reaches. The two things that make a strip fail are a dusty frame and a rushed application, which is why cleaning the frame first matters more than it looks.
